John Taormina has been head of the Visual Media Center at Duke University since 2000. During his 30-year career in image management, he has directed the art and architecture image collections at the University of Michigan, The Ohio State University, Oberlin College, and the George Washington University. Taormina served as the editor of the VRA Bulletin, the international journal of the Visual Resources Association, from 1996-2005, and was a member of the VRA Executive Board for seven years. From 2002-2004 he co-chaired the ARLIS/NA-VRA Joint Education Task Force, which developed the Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management (SEI). The first two offerings of the SEI were then held at Duke University in 2004 and 2005. He has regularly participated in the activities of his professional organizations, either as a session organizer or speaker at regional and national conferences, or in leadership positions as a committee and task force chair or board officer. In addition, he has co-instructed workshops on image management and visual resources fundamentals. At Duke, Taormina has been a participant in the 5-year Mellon-funded Visual Studies Initiative, has participated in university-wide collaborations on digital content delivery, served on humanities and digital collections library committees, participated in multi-year colloquia on digital technologies and the visual arts, organized and taught graduate workshops on digital asset discovery and management, and consulted on faculty projects to develop digital research archives and publications. In 2005 Taormina was the recipient of the VRA Distinguished Service Award (“for outstanding leadership through publications and educational programs”) as well as co-recipient of the VRA Nancy Delaurier Award (“for his efforts toward launching the highly successful inaugural 2004 SEI”) that same year. He has co-organized the visual resources curators group session at the annual meeting of the Southeast College Art Conference, to be held in Durham in October 2012, and is currently developing and co-editing a multi-authored book on Topics in Digital Image Management and Digital Curation.
