I attended the Pre-freshman Engineering Program and for three summers and math camp for three summers during junior high and high school. During that time, I was encouraged to apply to Stanford University. On faith, knowing my mom did not have money for any of her four children to go to college except through scholarship, I applied and was thoroughly blessed. After graduating with an interdisciplinary in the humanities (African and African American Studies), I moved to New York to serve a year with AmeriCorps. That year of service showed me how meaningful direct service is to my vocation. After years of allowing my dream of being a Christian author and speaker to lay dormant due to a disparaging conversation with my former Baptist pastor about bible college, two of my new pastors in New York encouraged me to reconsider the dream that God planted in my heart. Mieke Vandersall of Not So Churchy, encouraged me to consider her alma mater, Union, and Emily Scott of St. Lydia's Dinner Church along with Ben McKelahan of Parables provided spiritual and fiduciary support. All of these amazing pastors that I acquired in Brooklyn, the borough of churches, gave me the courage to say yes to both seminary and the call.
