For some time, I've been interested in leveraging digital humanities methods and technologies to contribute to cultural critique. About a decade ago, I made my first foray into the field by constructing a very simple database to compare and contrast different published editions of Walt Whitman's "Calamus" and "Live Oak, with Moss" poems. More recently, in 2010, I assisted Prof. David Radcliffe of Virginia Tech's Center for Applied Technology in the Humanities with two of his projects as part of a digital humanities class I was taking with him. Currently, I'm designing a digital archive of materials pertaining to the Young Patriots Organization, especially as that organization related to the Black Panthers and the Young Lords. From a pedagogical standpoint, I've been involved with a few unique experiments with digitally supplementing the conventional university experience. At Virginia Tech, I participated in developing a textbook and providing a course to undergraduate English Majors that involved building an ePortfolio of work from other classes using the Sakai LMS. The ePortfolios included digital multimedia narratives and required students both to write effectively for a web audience and to learn some basic HTML skills. During the last year, I've been developing open licensed course materials for Saylor.org's HTML/CSS course. Beginning this summer, I'm working on a project within GMU's Honors College that seeks to determine the best uses of interactive technology to support first year students engaging in complex research processes by involving advanced undergraduates in the development of online pedagogical materials. As to Žižek, I tend to think he's kind of mad and often think he uses Lacan as a way to distract me from realizing that his version of leftist politics looks a lot like Stalinism. That said, his notion of ideology as knowing the distance between the mask and the face, but insisting on the face nonetheless seems potentially productive. And, I played Galaga the other night at Joe's Inn in Vienna and couldn't get past Level 7; bummer!
