I am a PhD student in English at the University of Calgary. I am the first student to concentrate in Media and Digital Humanities. While I rated my technological skill below as intermediate, I have been teaching myself how to code for the past year in between my other responsibilities. I will be attending the DHSI in Victoria in June to study games. While my theoretical interests include Henry Jenkins' approaches to transmedia storytelling and Jane McGonigal's ideas about serious gaming, I have recently begun to incorporate the work of Gadamer and Ricoeur on hermeneutics into my approach to games. I came to academic work late in life, returning after a varied career in small business. Without telling you my age, I will tell you that I remember playing Galaga on an upright arcade machine, though I do not remember my score. I do remember being dragged from an arcade by my mother after playing Asteroids for nearly two hours on the same quarter, and once trying for days to get a perfect score on Pacman. The first film I ever saw in a theatre was the original Star Wars during its original theatrical release (my father took my brother and I in our pyjamas--my brother fell asleep). I wrote my first BASIC program on my first computer, an ATARI 400 with a cassette tape drive. I have been a geek for a long time, and I should fit right in.
