I am the Director of Design at Princeton University Press where I manage a group of print designers. While not a technical person, I am fascinated by what technical people can do, particularly when they are creative. I have a lot of friends who are engineers, musicians, computer scientists and animators, and they use technology in the most amazing ways. I want to see what creative ideas are bubbling up in publishing. At PUP I was part of the XML-First team and was active in tagging all of our current content and adapting that workflow for our team of ten book designers. My technology skills are limited: I know some html, css, and php, and can mess with the code in Wordpress a little bit. I am a former PhD candidate in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania (perpetual ABD with incomplete dissertation stored on old floppies). Last year I spent two weeks revisiting my research (the intersection of sociology and architecture in the work of Denise Scott Brown and Alison and Peter Smithson) and was astounded by the resources available for scholars now. It's a beautiful and exciting thing. My biggest contribution to THATcamp would be my ability to grasp ideas quickly and to see how different strands of thought connect. I will definitely be on the less techy side and plan to listen more than to lead. I always end up participating in creative discussions so I should have something to contribute--just no idea what!
