I am an Associate Professor in Research and Evaluation in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. I was the researcher director of one of the early studies of K-12 networking (the Hanau Model School Partnership) and for many years have taught a course called "Planning, Technology, and School Improvement". I was an early on-line innovator on our campus and a portion of my teaching load is taught online. For many years I have been working on issues related to the use of new technologies in qualitative research. I have written about the history of the development of these tools and possible future directions. I have been interested in the tensions that technology has raised for qualitative researchers, and the chasm that appears to be developing between senior researchers (who reject technology) and emerging researchers (some who are breaking fantastic new ground in the study of social media, and others who are wondering if there are technology tools that could help them). Qualitative researchers have been mightily influenced by new directions in the humanities over the last few decades. As a methodological area we are poised between humanities and social sciences. The new digital directions in the humanities offer many possibilities to us. I would like to learn more about what is being done in digital humanities so I can think about its application to qualitative research. When I am not thinking about qualitative research--I devote much thought to the realm of felt and other fiber arts!
