Greetings from the Nutmeg State! Like many in the academic world, I wear many hats and have many interests. I am an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Connecticut, with a joint appointment with our Department of History. My research interests include the history of nursing, particularly, nurses who have served our country in wartime. I am writing a book about the interconnectedness of the military and the American Red Cross during World War I (an off-shoot of my dissertation research, completed in 2007 from UVA). Since I was not able to capture the stories from WWI nurses themselves as they were either all deceased or very elderly and frail when I was conducting my research, I began collecting oral histories from nurses who served in WWII and every conflict since then.Through a small internal grant, I have had the privilege of collecting oral histories of nurse veterans that are available in their entirety to the public via the Dolan Collection and the Dodd Center Archive on campus. From those data, I created an interactive exhibit on the Web where anyone can hear the stories of the veterans in their own words. I plan to continue this work, hopefully through an externally funded grant. On my 'down time' I love to spend time with my husband and our 2 year old little guy, Nate, and practice as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in an Emergency Department.
