I am an cultural anthropologist, so kind of on the hum/soc sci fence. Field work always encompasses collecting big or little pieces of people's oral histories, people's narratives. Lately I've been working with people from refugee backgrounds, for whom narrative histories are often a way of making sense of their experience. Somalilanders, like many resettled refugees, use the internet to keep up with developments at back in Hargeisa and the members of a far flung diaspora. I want to do that too, in a way that is interactive, not voyeuristic. I do OK with technology for one whose first fieldwork was done just before the personal computer came on the market. Mainly I have dealt with my computer/web issues by getting help from ex-husband, 14 year old boys, 8 year old girls, and random passersby. Fellow THATCampers could either become part of that enabling retinue or snap me out of my dependency. Only thing I can contribute is being a good listener who can get to heart of what other people are thinking about their research.
