I am a fifth year PhD in the music department at Duke. My dissertation--At the Vanguard of Vinyl: Long Playing Records and the Reproduction of Live Performance in Jazz--is a cultural history of the long-playing record and its influence on artistic production and historical construction in jazz. I'm interesting in the history of sound reproduction, the relationship between musical improvisation and sound recording, and historical moments of transition of everyday technologies. I am also a member of the PhD Lab in Digital Knowledge at Duke where I have recently began a two-year project with my colleagues Mary Caton Lingold and Whitney Trettien where we hope to develop a digital sound tool for various forms of scholarly production. Our website is: http://sites.fhi.duke.edu/soundbox/. I also play jazz saxophone and am a mean three-ball juggler.
