Way back when, I learned basic html, dabbled in Dreamweaver, and played with a few early apps but in the end, I allowed my skills to atrophy because I didn't think I had a reason to pursue them. I am now kicking myself. I graduated from the University of California, Riverside, in 2002 with a Ph.D. in Latin American History after overcoming a few challenges like having bicycled into the path of a pickup truck (I lost) and having broken my right elbow on my last research trip for my dissertation (don't ask how). While the digital project I have in mind may be rather out of my field of specialty, I grew up in Maryland and love Maryland history. Both of my parents are immigrants who were children in the Ukraine and Germany during World War II, and their stories are essentially what turned me into a historian. I have never felt driven to publish or perish, but I do love primary source materials and would love to become a digital curator who enables people to get in touch with their past. No Galaga to report, but one of my favorite teenage memories is of staying up until 4 am to finish what turned out to be a 4 hour session of Pac-man played against my Dad. I still play WOW, with an occasional wander into Diablo or Civilization. I'm currently reading Sufism and Jihad in Senegal (slowly), Brisingr (very slowly), Dumb Luck and re-reading Vonnegut's Bluebeard. I'm getting back into bicycling and hope to bike South Mountain within the year.
