I am an historian at the University of Illinois who was recently awarded a Canada Research Chair (and the dedicated funding that comes with it!). My area of interest, and one that I face when working with undergraduate students, is the question of how much technological abilities these students ought to have when dealing with historical inquiry. Part of the mandate of this CRC is to contribute to developing a support system for digital humanities. My work is situated in the theoretical framework of "community informatics" and brings together historical scholarship (mostly through inquiry) with more recent tools that advances humanities scholarship. Otherwise, I continue to examine how museums and archives utilize technology tools to present the public with opportunity to create new knowledge. I am interested in how students bring the content and the tools together to construct knowledge and how such a pairing presents both intellectual development and cognitive frustrations. I admit freely that I am truly a newbie in the digital humanities scholarship, primarily because I have yet to bring the two elements together in a way that makes sense .....
